Biography
Daveed Gartenstein-Ross is the vice president of research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. He consults for a number of clients who need to be at the forefront of understanding terrorism and Islamic extremism, has conducted law enforcement training for the Department of Homeland Security and local agencies, and has served as a Subject Matter Expert for the U.S. Department of State’s office of antiterrorism assistance.
Gartenstein-Ross has testified about religious radicalization in prisons before the U.S. Senate’s Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and Georgia’s state legislature. In addition to his book My Year Inside Radical Islam, his writings on the global war on terror have appeared in Reader’s Digest, Middle East Quarterly, The Wall Street Journal Europe, Commentary, Middle East Times, The Weekly Standard, and The Dallas Morning News. He is the coauthor of two forthcoming book chapters, and the Manhattan Institute has published a monograph he wrote about the convergence of crime and terrorism. Gartenstein-Ross frequently appears on TV and talk radio to provide analysis of terrorism. Recent appearances include al-Jazeera, Hannity & Colmes (Fox News Channel), Glenn Beck on Headline News (CNN), The 700 Club (CBN), PBS, NPR, The Laura Ingraham Show, The Radio Factor with Bill O’Reilly, and The Dennis Prager Show. He has also appeared on TV and the radio in Afghanistan, Britain, Canada, Finland, France, Indonesia, and Turkey.
Venues where Gartenstein-Ross has made public addresses include Harvard Law School, Kenyon College, and Tyndale University College & Seminary (Toronto, Canada). He frequently addresses college and university audiences, law enforcement, civic and political groups, and religious groups. Gartenstein-Ross has also appeared on law enforcement and policy panels at the LAPD’s Joint Regional Intelligence Conference, the Cato Institute, and elsewhere.
Gartenstein-Ross was awarded the Claremont Institute’s prestigious Lincoln Fellowship in 2007, is co-chairman of the Counterterrorism Foundation, and serves on the board of advisors for the Center for Threat Awareness.
Previous positions that Gartenstein-Ross has held include senior terrorism analyst at the Investigative Project on Terrorism, commercial litigator at Boies, Schiller & Flexner, and law clerk on the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. He earned a J.D. from the New York University School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review, and a B.A. from Wake Forest University, where he won the 1997 National Debate Tournament. He has traveled widely—including visiting Iraq and the Gitmo detention facilities—and can conduct research in several languages, including Arabic, Italian, and Spanish.
